Our Roots Are Tied To The Railroad
Garner began in 1847 as a wood and water stop servicing the North Carolina Railroad that connected Goldsboro and Charlotte. By 1878 Garner acquired its first post office, and at that time was called by the name “Garner’s Station”. Over time, more and more businesses began to set up shop in Garner’s Station and in 1905, when it acquired a railroad depot, it was reincorporated as the town of Garner.
Even before the railroad spurred the growth of this little town, the surrounding area was dominated by cotton and tobacco farms — industries that would be vital to Garner’s prosperity throughout the 20th century. Eventually, many of the farms would be replaced by paved roads and buildings, but the humble roots of our beloved town will never be forgotten.
Less Than 10 Miles From Raleigh
Garner is a quiet, medium-sized town of about 28,000 residents that is consistently ranked as one of the best places to work and live. Some of the reasons for its popularity include affordability and small-town charm — two desirable attributes that make living here even better when you consider that the capital city of Raleigh is just a handful of miles away. Many people enjoy being able to live in a quaint, neighborly town, yet have access to big city amenities and nightlife. That’s one of the reasons why we think Garner is such a perfect location to live. You can get to Raleigh in under 15 minutes if you want to — but then again, chances are you’ll be able to find everything you could ever want right here in Garner.
Location, Location, Location
People not only choose Garner for it’s close proximity to Raleigh, but it’s now seeing a new wave of growth and prosperity with the recent arrival of an Amazon distribution warehouse in 2019. Many of the people who live in Garner tend to drive to Raleigh for work, but now there are more options for residents who would rather find an employer even closer to home.
Making a Great Town Even Better
Garner possesses a type of historical charm, reminiscent of days gone by, which makes it an enjoyable and relaxing place to live. However, in an effort to make an already great town even better, plans are in place to enhance economic development and entrepreneurship while also putting greater attention on supporting cultural arts and entertainment. The result of this new focus is seen in the beautifully painted wall murals on buildings throughout downtown, the surge of small businesses and unique shops, and a feeling that Garner is experiencing a new chapter in community development.
