Your Ultimate Moving Checklist

Moving into a new place can be both exciting and exhausting at the same time. There are so many things to think about and remember. Even if your move isn’t a big one, and it’s just you moving across town to another apartment, you don’t want to wait until the last minute to gather your things. The best way to avoid some of the stress of moving is to create a good plan and a thorough checklist well before your actual move-in date. At Summerwind Apartments in Garner, we know a thing or two about moving, and we’re here to give you some tips on creating your ultimate moving checklist. Two Months Before Your Move

Most people have at least a couple of months before they have to move to their new home. If you have more time than that — great, get started as soon as possible — but if not, six weeks to a month should give you ample time to do many of the things you need to do before your move. Just don’t wait too long…the clock is ticking.

Purge Unwanted Items

During this time, you’ll want to start going through your belongings and start purging the things that you no longer want or need. This will make packing easier (you’ll have less to pack) and moving easier as well (you’ll have less to move and unpack). The best thing to do is to go room by room, taking stock of what you can get rid of by either donating it, giving it to a friend, recycling it, or as a last resort — throwing it away.

Schedule a Moving Truck

Unless you’re only moving a few things and you don’t own any large appliances or furniture, chances are you’re going to need a moving truck. Depending on your budget, the moving truck might consist of a friend’s pick-up, but either way, you’ll want to make sure to make arrangements for some type of vehicle to help move all of your stuff.

If you’re going to rent a moving truck, you’ll want to reserve it well in advance. If you wait too long, you might be left with having to rent the huge truck for three times the cost you wanted to spend. Or, worse yet, you might be left with no options at all. There’s nothing worse than having to move all of your things one carload at a time.

Hire Movers

Just like the moving truck, you may also want to schedule movers to help you move your things. If so, there’s a good chance they’ll come with their own truck. But, don’t assume this. It’s always best to ask what’s included ahead of time. If your budget doesn’t allow for a professional moving team, perhaps you’ll want to contact some of your best buddies or a few helpful family members to see if they would be willing to provide some muscle on your moving day. Don’t be surprised if everyone mysteriously has a full schedule when you mention you need help moving. The best way to get around this is to have something good to offer in return — how about free beer and pizza?

Collect Moving Supplies

Don’t wait until the last minute to start gathering boxes for your move. There’s nothing more frustrating than having to move an entire kitchen full of small appliances and gadgets and having no boxes to put them in. Plus, you’ll want to make sure that you have far more boxes than you think you’ll need. It’s better to have too many — if you don’t need them, you can always throw them in the recycle bin on your way out.

One Month Before Your Move

Start Packing

At least one month before your move you’ll want to start packing. Obviously, you can’t pack the things that you use every day, but you can certainly pack up items that are seasonal or haven’t been used in a while. But, if you haven’t used something in a few years, why not just put it in your donation box and save yourself the hassle?

It might seem like you still have a long time to wait when you start packing a month out but trust us — packing always takes longer than you think. Wouldn’t you rather get done with time to spare than have to pull an all-nighter just to get everything done the night before your move?

Make Sure to Label Everything

This step should really go hand-in-hand with packing. If there’s one thing you can do to make your move easier and avoid a lot of headaches, it’s to make sure you are labeling everything as you go. Just imagine getting into your new home after a long day of moving and being surrounded by a hundred blank cardboard boxes. All you want to do is take a shower, and chances are, your shower curtain will be in the 99th box you open — unless you have your boxes clearly labeled!

One Week Before Your Move

Finish Packing

You should be nearly finished packing at least one week before your move-in day. Set aside a few special totes or boxes to carry the necessities you’ll need to have available right up until the day you move.  Other than these few necessities, everything else should be in your clearly labeled boxes, ready to go.

Confirm With the Movers

If you’ve hired professional movers, now is a good time to confirm that they’ll be there on the day and at the time that you need them. While you already made arrangements with them several weeks ago, it’s always a good idea to follow up with them to avoid any surprises or miscommunication.

Disassemble Furniture

If you have any furniture that can be disassembled, you should do that now. You won’t have time to do it on moving day, so you should go ahead and take apart your bed. It won’t hurt anything to have it sitting on the ground for a few days. Do you have an extra television, stereo system, or other furniture that you don’t absolutely need over the next week? Save yourself some time by disassembling it and boxing it up now.
