How To Get Along With Your New Neighbors

You’ve heard the horror stories about “neighbors from hell.” Whether they are wearing concrete shoes on the floor above you or blasting their bass from below, nobody wants to have a difficult relationship with their neighbors. That’s why Summerwind Apartments in North Carolina put together this helpful guide for getting along with the folks above, below, left, and right of you — your neighbors!

Introduce Yourself With a Kind Gesture

They say a little bit of kindness goes a long way, but this is especially true when you’re meeting new neighbors. We suggest starting off your first meeting with your neighbors on the right foot. Maybe you bake them a cake or bring them a bottle of wine; whatever the occasion, just make sure it is sincere. Doing so will help start your relationship with your neighbor off on positive terms. Additionally, you’ll get to learn a little about them and their tastes, so you can continue to build that bond in the future.

Go to Community Events

Communities don’t put on events just for fun (well, they do, but that’s not their only purpose). Community events exist to help people mingle and engage with their neighbors over some kind of shared social activity. Dances and exercise classes are usually popular choices for community events, but we encourage you to shop around and find something that sounds enticing to you.

Sign Up for Memberships

Community events are one thing, but memberships are another. Unlike a one-time event like a community event, memberships are recurring usually on a weekly basis, and they are exclusive, meaning you’re going to be a part of something small and likely niche. Luckily, signing up for a membership to something isn’t as daunting as it might seem, and it’s a great way to meet and mingle. For example, many people choose to pay for gym memberships, and oftentimes members of a specific gym will meet over the course of the week to exercise together. Buying a membership is like a shortcut to getting along with neighbors.

Invite Your Neighbors Over

Finally, when attending events isn’t enough, you can always invite your neighbor over for dinner, a drink, to chat, or to even spend time away from your apartment if you’re doing something elsewhere, like visiting a local park. Inviting your neighbors over is by far the most direct way of getting along with your neighbors, as you’re deliberately communicating to them that you would like to get to know them a little better, and more importantly you’re letting them know that you’re going to be living next to them for the foreseeable future. Plus, taking an active interest in someone is always a great way to make friends.

Noisy neighbors are certainly an annoyance, but an outright war between you and the people living above or below you isn’t acceptable, no matter the circumstances. Summerwind Apartments goes to great lengths to make sure you’re comfortable with the place you live in, and who you share it with. That’s why we offer plenty of fun events and spaces for you to meet and greet your new neighbors. We’re also less than ten miles away from Raleigh, our state’s capital.
